Isabela Merced and Patrick Schwarzenegger are set to play Lorena and John Bobbitt in the next season of Hulu's Good American Family.
According to Deadline, the new season is a limited series that is "inspired by the ripped-from-the-headlines story of the infamous Virginia couple, who incited a media circus that treated trauma as entertainment, launched a thousand dirty jokes and ignited a gender war.”
Hulu still has yet to announce the season's title, premiere date and the rest of the cast.
The case dates to June 23, 1993, at the couple's apartment in Manassas, Virginia. Lorena said John came home drunk, demanded sex, and raped her. After he fell asleep, she took a kitchen knife and cut off almost half of his penis.
She then drove away, threw the severed organ out of her car window into a field and later called 911. Emergency workers found it, and surgeons reattached it during a nine-and-a-half-hour operation. Lorena later said the attack followed abuse during their marriage.
On November 10, 1993, a jury acquitted John of marital sexual assault.
At Lorena's trial, her defense pointed to depression, PTSD and battered women's syndrome. On January 21, 1994, a jury found her not guilty by reason of insanity. The couple divorced in 1995.
The case has been dramatized before: Jordan Peele produced the 2019 Amazon docuseries Lorena, and Lifetime aired the TV movie I Was Lorena Bobbitt in 2020.
Season 1 of Good American Family premiered in March 2025 and told the story of the Natalia Grace adoption case, with Ellen Pompeo in the lead role.
