Alanis Morissette has shared some big public news, coming out to the world as pansexual.
The singer-songwriter made the reveal on the November 3 episode of Handsome, the podcast hosted by Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster, and Mae Martin. It started when Feimster praised the music that came out of Morissette's heartbreaks.
"I'm sorry for the men that hurt you, but I'm not sorry for the songs that came from it," Feimster said around the one-hour mark, before asking: "Did it make you want to be a lesbian at any point?"
Morissette's answer was simple: "I'm pansexual, so, yeah." A stunned Notaro pressed her with: "Wait, you're not really pansexual, are you?" and Morissette replied: "I am."
Notaro teased her for waiting until the end of the show to announce her news. "You're supposed to come into the Handsome podcast leading with, 'I'm pansexual,'" Notaro said. Morissette replied: "You know, I like to leave it for the epilogue."
Being pansexual means that Morrisette is attracted to others regardless of their gender identity or sex.
Morissette, 52, broke out in 1995 with Jagged Little Pill and has since won seven Grammys and 14 Junos. The album's 2019 Broadway adaptation picked up two Tony Awards, and she joined the Songwriters Hall of Fame at a June gala.
She has been married to Mario "Souleye" Treadway since 2010, and the couple have three children: Winter, Onyx, and Ever.
Morissette has been open about her sexuality before without putting a name to it. Back in 2008, the singer described her experience with sexual experimentation to Advocate. "I think it's a beautiful rite of passage for everyone to play with their sexuality at some point, so I did exactly that. And it was great!" she said.
In other Morissette news, the singer recently spoke on the Call Her Daddy podcast about her famous Sex and the City kiss with Sarah Jessica Parker.
"I reached out to them, and I said, 'Might it be a nice time for Carrie to experience a lesbian moment?' And they said, 'Why, yes. We were thinking the same thing,'" the singer said.
