DR Congo's soccer team made history this past week — but the team were missing one of its key supporters.
As the Leopards battled Portugal to a 1-1 draw at Houston's NRG Stadium on Wednesday (June 17), fans watching around the world wondered where the team's beloved superfan Lumumba Vea was.
Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, better known as "Lumumba Vea," was absent from the stands as DR Congo earned its first-ever World Cup point and scored its first goal in tournament history. He was unable to attend because of health and travel complications tied to Ebola protocols in DR Congo, which led to a 21-day isolation period and delayed his entry into the United States.
There is good news, though. Multiple reports are now indicating that Mboladinga has cleared the necessary health and immigration requirements and is expected to rejoin DR Congo's official delegation in time for the team's June 23 showdown against Colombia.

Why Is Lumumba Vea So Famous?
Michel Nkuka Mboladinga isn't your average soccer fan. Since 2013, he has become one of DR Congo's most recognizable supporters by standing perfectly still throughout matches while dressed in vibrant suits inspired by the Congolese flag. He doesn't cheer, celebrate or react to anything happening on the pitch and just keeps one arm raised toward the sky.
The pose is a tribute to Patrice Lumumba, DR Congo's first prime minister and a symbol of the country's independence movement. Mboladinga carefully recreates Lumumba's famous statue, from the vintage glasses to the tailored suit and unwavering posture.
Mboladinga has said he trains himself to remain motionless for long periods before matches because he believes his presence gives the national team emotional strength.
AFCON Turned Him Into a Star
Although he'd been a familiar face for years, Mboladinga's popularity exploded during AFCON 2025. His statue-like pose went viral across social media, and after DR Congo was eliminated by Algeria in the Round of 16, fans carried him from the stands like a national hero.
The tournament also sparked an unexpected controversy. Algeria forward Mohamed Amine Amoura mocked Mboladinga's signature pose after the match, drawing criticism online.
Amoura later apologized publicly, and Algeria's national team eventually invited Mboladinga to visit training camp, where they presented him with a jersey featuring "Lumumba" on the back.
DR Congo Made History Without Him
The Leopards nearly had their lucky charm back in Houston. Instead, Mboladinga watched from afar as DR Congo secured a historic 1-1 draw against Portugal in front of thousands of fans.
Portugal struck first through as Joao Neves scored just six minutes into the match, but DR Congo responded before halftime when Yoane Wissa found the net in stoppage time.
The goal was monumental as it was DR Congo's first-ever World Cup goal and helped secure the nation's first point at the tournament after losing all three of its previous World Cup matches. While Mboladinga wasn't there to strike his iconic pose, he is expected be back soon.
And if DR Congo's most famous supporter returns for Colombia, expect millions of viewers to spend at least a few moments watching the stands just to make sure he's there.
