Jalen Brunson just helped end the New York Knicks' 53-year championship drought, and his mother, Sandra Brunson, has a message for everyone who doubted him: She remembers.
In an emotional open letter published by The Players' Tribune on Oct. 20, hours before the Knicks received their championship rings at Madison Square Garden, Sandra revisited the criticism surrounding her son's arrival in New York, including accusations that his father, Knicks assistant coach Rick Brunson, helped him land his contract.
"I remember when you signed with the Knicks, one of the things that people would say about you is that you were some kind of 'nepo baby,'" she wrote, recalling suggestions that Rick's connections secured Jalen's opportunity.
Sandra had another response for those critics: "I told you, Mama Bear kept receipts!"
The skepticism followed Brunson after he left the Dallas Mavericks for New York in 2022. Questions about his contract and ability to lead a championship contender persisted even as he established himself among the NBA's top guards.
Former WNBA star and coach Becky Hammon also questioned whether a smaller point guard could lead a team to a title, famously declaring, "If your best player is small, you're not winning."
Brunson eventually answered those doubts on the court.
The Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in five games during the 2026 NBA Finals, with Brunson averaging 32.6 points and earning Finals MVP honors. He delivered 45 points in the championship-clinching Game 5, securing New York's first NBA title since 1973.
His leadership was also tested during Game 4, when the Knicks erased a staggering 29-point deficit to defeat San Antonio 107-106. Teammate Jose Alvarado contributed eight fourth-quarter points and three assists during the comeback.
"When your opponent tries to bring out the worst in you, you rise above and get the job done," she wrote. "We find a way."
Those messages were part of a nearly 15-year tradition that began when Brunson was in high school. Sandra initially left encouraging notes around their home before transitioning to texts as his basketball career progressed.
But her support extended beyond motivational messages.
Sandra recalled the uncertainty surrounding Rick's years as an NBA journeyman, including his time with the Knicks, when the family frequently relocated and navigated unpredictable contracts.
She also remembered how warmly New York treated them during those years, making Jalen's championship with the same franchise especially meaningful.
"When someone shows kindness to your kid? You never forget it," she wrote.
The championship has since brought recognition beyond basketball. Brunson and teammates Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, and OG Anunoby were named among EBONY's 2026 Power 100 Leaders in Sports, while Brunson's Finals performance cemented his place in Knicks history.
