Key Takeaways

  • Ice Cube believes Chris Tucker will return as Smokey in Last Friday, but cautions that "nothing is 100 percent" until filming begins.
  • Cube expects filming to run from April through May, possibly into June, with Lawrence Lamont directing a story by Cube, DJ Pooh, Aaron McGruder and Mike Epps.
  • Cube plans a soundtrack mixing new and old music, likely including a new track of his own and potentially a Dr. Dre-produced song.

Ice Cube has given fans an update on Last Friday, revealing a production start date and that a familiar face is probably going to be making a return.

In a new interview with Complex on the set of Listen & Laugh, his new podcast with Mike Epps, Cube was asked about the fact that Chris Tucker — who played Smokey in the original Friday movie — is currently listed among the cast on the IMDb page for the upcoming movie.

"Nothing is 100 percent until we start shooting and get it in the can," he said. "But I believe he's going to do this movie. He wants to do this movie, and, you know, if circumstances all line up, he will do this movie."

Epps, who was sat next to Cube, also weighed in on the subject, adding that Tucker "said he was doing it. He said he wanted to do it."

When the conversation turned to the film's storyline, Cube didn't give much away other than the fact that "it's funny."

Cube said the "story by Ice Cube, DJ Pooh, Aaron McGruder, and Mike [Epps]" is "great," and that he's also planning "a great soundtrack" that blends new and old music, probably featuring a new Ice Cube track and, if they can get it, a song produced by Dr. Dre.

Cube expects cameras to roll in "April, May, and maybe a little of June," with "a young, hungry director" in Lawrence Lamont at the helm.

The first episode of Listen & Laugh, with special guest Dr. Dre, premiered on Friday (November 6) — watch it here. New episodes come out every Friday at 6 P.M. ET / 3 P.M. PT.
