A fire that took place in a holding cell for women at Rikers Island yesterday evening sent 14 staffers to the hospital.
The New York Post reports that someone lit the mattress, which sent heavy amounts of smoke through the area around 5:45 p.m. Each of the 14 victims were treated for smoke inhalation at hospitals in the area, with many in serious, yet stable condition. The Post added that, as of last night, authorities said the fire was still under investigation.
