Key Takeaways

  • Russell Brand testified that the rape and sexual assault allegations against him have devastated his marriage, children and health, adding that no one would testify on his behalf.
  • Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones challenged Brand’s claim that friends and colleagues had abandoned him, citing his millions of followers and a packed post-documentary show which was attended by 2,000 people.
  • Brand said consent is “fundamental, essential, necessary and indeed more important than sex itself” and denied three rape counts, three sexual assault counts and one indecent assault count.

Russell Brand testified in his criminal trial on Wednesday (Oct. 28), where he claimed his friends have abandoned him since the allegations of rape and sexual assault by six different women surfaced.

After agreeing with his lawyer Ian Winter’s claim that “no one will touch me with a bargepole” since the 2023 documentary Russell Brand: In Plain Sight aired, Brand faced pushback from prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones, who countered by pointing out how he performed in front of 2,000 people at a London venue following the release of the doc, according to Deadline.

“You have a platform with followers in the millions, don’t you?” Karmy-Jones remarked. “This is not a case of ‘Poor Mr Brand’ who’s been taken apart by the media and the social construct.”

Brand claimed the allegations against him have been “devastating,” alleging he has been unable to convince anyone to testify on his behalf.

“My entire life has been consumed by these events, these allegations, these accusations,” he said, as reported by NBC News.

Brand claimed the allegations have come “at the expense of my marriage, my children and health.”

The disgraced comedian claimed he was not allowed to stay with his son after undergoing open heart surgery “due to the material published.”

During questioning about the alleged rape of a woman in a hotel room during a Labour Party conference, Brand said, “Consent is fundamental, essential, necessary and indeed more important than sex itself.”

Brand denied all charges, which include three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault.
