Key Takeaways

  • A report attributed Sahara Ray’s death at 34 to a fentanyl overdose, but no coroner or law enforcement agency has confirmed her official cause of death or whether it was accidental.
  • The Australian model and Sahara Ray Swim founder reportedly entered a Los Angeles hospital on life support before dying surrounded by her family.
  • Ray had documented paralysis from Guillain-Barré syndrome after a 2024 car crash and welcomed her daughter, Snow Ray Dow, in January.

Sahara Ray’s death was reportedly caused by a fentanyl overdose, according to a new report released just days after the Australian model, swimwear designer, and new mother died at 34.

The New York Post said that Ray overdosed on Friday, October 18, and was taken to a Los Angeles hospital, where she was placed on life support. Her family reportedly removed her from life support on Sunday, October 16.

The Post confirms that the fentanyl overdose was an initial report, and that an official cause of death has not been released. The reported overdose has not been confirmed by a coroner or law enforcement agency, and it remains unclear whether it was accidental.

Ray’s family initially confirmed the news of her passing to TMZ, saying she “passed away last night surrounded by family at the hospital” and was “so loved.”

Long before the headlines about her dating life, Ray built a career around the beach culture she grew up in. The daughter of Australian surfer Tony Ray, she split her childhood between California, Australia, and Hawaii before studying at Los Angeles’ Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

In 2014, she launched Sahara Ray Swim, turning her own sun-soaked aesthetic into a brand while building an Instagram following that eventually neared 900,000.

Her personal life later became a regular point of public fascination. In 2016, Ray was photographed vacationing in Hawaii with Justin Bieber, sparking relationship rumors that neither publicly confirmed.

She was also linked to fellow Australian performer Cody Simpson in 2015 and was photographed kissing Mod Sun in 2023, shortly after his split from Avril Lavigne.

Ray and Mod Sun later appeared together at Ashton Michael’s 10-year anniversary fashion show in Los Angeles that November, in one of her final public appearances before her health ordeal became public.

In May 2024, Ray revealed that a drunk driver traveling roughly 80 miles per hour had struck her vehicle just days before her 31st birthday. She said the crash sent her body into shock and preceded a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder in which the immune system attacks the nerves.

The condition left her paralyzed from the thighs down and relying on a wheelchair and walker. “Right now, I’m paralyzed from the tops of my upper thighs all the way down to my feet. I can’t walk at all,” Ray said after the accident.

In a separate update, she said she hoped and prayed that she would walk again.

Ray entered a new chapter this year when she welcomed her first child, a daughter named Snow Ray Dow, in January. Her final Instagram post, shared in July, featured photos of Snow with the caption, “My whole heart 🤍 baby Snow.”
