Married at First Sight UK has officially reached the end of the aisle. Channel 4 has pulled the plug on the hit reality dating series after 10 seasons, following a sexual assault scandal involving multiple former contestants.
The cancellation comes months after allegations against three on-screen husbands triggered police involvement and an independent investigation into the show's treatment of participants.
According to NBC News, Channel 4 CEO Priya Dogra announced the decision on Thursday, November 5, despite an external review finding no overall breach of broadcasting regulations. The network won't air an already filmed season, and it has removed previous episodes from its streaming platforms.
Dogra said the series had simply "run its course," but two independent reviews raised serious questions about how the show's format affected contestants.
The biggest issue? A reality show built around marrying complete strangers may have been putting participants under pressure to become physically intimate.
Former BBC One controller Lorraine Heggessey, who conducted one of the reviews, identified several elements of the series that warranted reconsideration, including "Intimacy Week" and "Partner Swap Week."
Her report warned that contestants could "become dependent on production and lose touch with reality," potentially affecting their decision-making. Recommendations included separate bedrooms, emergency panic buttons, additional monitoring, and allowing participants more freedom to leave filming.
Channel 4 acknowledged that adopting those protections would fundamentally change the show.
"The recommendations are eminently sensible and feasible, but considering their wholesale implementation provoked fundamental questions about the editorial proposition of a show that, I believe, has now run its course over ten years," Dogra said.
The controversy erupted after a BBC Panorama investigation featured three women who accused their on-screen husbands of sexual misconduct. Two alleged they were raped during production, including one who claimed her husband threatened her with an acid attack.
Another contestant, Shona Manderson, accused former partner Bradley Skelly of ejaculating inside her without consent. All three men denied wrongdoing.
One woman recalled her husband allegedly telling her, "You can't say no, you're my wife." Another claimed she reported an alleged assault before her season aired, but her episodes were broadcast anyway.
A male cast member was subsequently arrested on suspicion of rape in June.
A separate review by law firm Clyde & Co examined more than 30,000 documents and hours of footage. Although it found no overall regulatory breach, it identified instances where the show's welfare framework was not fully followed. The review did not determine whether the alleged assaults occurred.
CPL Productions, which made the series, defended its welfare procedures as "extensive, extremely thorough and of a high standard."
The cancellation marks a major development for the international Married at First Sight franchise, which also has American and Australian editions. Those versions have not been canceled as part of Channel 4's decision.
