A two-time Jeopardy! winner is facing another criminal case just months after being convicted of secretly recording a woman at a vacation rental. Joey DeSena, who won nearly $45,000 during his run on the game show, was arrested in North Carolina on October 23 and charged with 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the latest arrest comes less than three months after DeSena received probation in a separate case involving unlawful recordings. Authorities also issued a warrant accusing him of duplicating sexually explicit images and videos involving children.
Following his initial court appearance, DeSena was booked into the Wake County Jail and held without bail. Additional details about the investigation, beyond the alleged offense date of Nov. 19, 2025, have not been disclosed.
DeSena was previously known to Jeopardy! viewers as a Raleigh-based development engineer who competed on the syndicated quiz show in 2024. He won two consecutive games, collecting $44,698 before his third appearance ended his winning streak.
His performance earned him another opportunity to compete in the 2025 Champions Wildcard tournament, where he advanced to the semifinals before being eliminated.
His legal troubles first became public in December 2025, when he was arrested on two felony counts of secret peeping. Those charges stemmed from allegations that he recorded a woman without her knowledge in her bedroom and bathroom. DeSena subsequently pleaded guilty, bringing that criminal case to a close earlier this year.
Rather than receiving an immediate prison sentence, DeSena was placed on probation for 60 months. The court also ordered him to complete 100 hours of community service and undergo a mental health evaluation conducted by a psychologist specializing in psychosexual treatment. The court imposed the conditions as part of his sentence in the earlier case, which is separate from the allegations behind his latest arrest.
The new charges place DeSena among a growing list of former Jeopardy! contestants whose legal troubles have attracted attention beyond their appearances on television. Another former contestant, Winston Nguyen, who competed in 2014 and later taught mathematics at Brooklyn's Saint Ann's School, was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2025 after pleading guilty to charges involving online exploitation.
Nguyen also became the subject of a federal civil lawsuit in January 2026, with plaintiffs alleging that school administrators failed to respond adequately to warnings about his conduct. Saint Ann's has disputed the lawsuit's characterization of its involvement.
DeSena's next court appearance is scheduled for November 16.
