Miss Jones Calls Out Ebro Over Angie Martinez’s Hot 97 Exit: 'That’s an Insult'

  • Martinez joined rival Power 105.1 after nearly two decades at Hot 97, framing her departure as a chance to grow, reach new markets, and pursue other opportunities.

Miss Jones is blaming Ebro Darden for the management failure she believes opened the door for Angie Martinez to leave Hot 97.

During a Nov. 1 appearance on the Quiet Part Out Loud podcast, the former morning-show host said Martinez’s contract allegedly crept toward its expiration date without the station locking down one of its most valuable personalities. Jones stopped short of accusing Ebro of intentionally forcing Martinez out, but she made it clear where she believes responsibility belonged.

“From what I was told, she was in that period of the contract’s about to expire,” Jones said.

According to the radio veteran, the program director should have alerted the station’s lawyers and started negotiations long before Martinez had reason to consider her options. Jones questioned whether Ebro, who was also building his own on-air presence, had focused enough on protecting the rest of Hot 97’s lineup.

Darden announced in March 2014 that he was stepping down as Hot 97's program director. Jay Dixon, who had been serving as interim director, was named to the position permanently in July, a month after Martinez left.

“If you’re the program director and you’re more concerned with your morning show,” she said, suggesting an important responsibility can get lost.

Jones argued that Martinez’s stature should have made her renewal an urgent priority. By 2014, Martinez had spent more than two decades at Hot 97 and built a reputation as “The Voice of New York,” landing major interviews while becoming inseparable from the station’s identity.

“Why would any program director that is fully invested in their station allow one of the top-tier talents—Angie Martinez’s contract—to even come within 90 days of renewal and not renew?” Jones asked. “That’s an insult.”

She also acknowledged one theory about why management might not have rushed to keep Martinez, suggesting that her departure could have created more room for other personalities.

Jones immediately clarified that she was not presenting that possibility as fact. “Let me not say that that was his plan or that’s even what he did,” she said. “I’m not saying that.”

Her broader allegation was more straightforward: Hot 97 had mishandled the business of retaining a defining talent and left Martinez wondering about her future.

Martinez announced her resignation in June 2014 and quickly joined Power 105.1, Hot 97’s most direct New York competitor. At the time, she publicly framed the move as a chance to grow, reach audiences in additional markets, and pursue opportunities she did not see at her longtime station.

The switch became one of the most significant talent moves in New York radio history.

Martinez later expanded beyond daily radio with her bestselling memoir My Voice, the Angie Martinez IRL podcast, and television projects. She was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2020 and was selected for the Hollywood Walk of Fame's Class of 2024.

Jones knows firsthand how abruptly Hot 97 can move on from an established voice. Her own run at the station ended in 2008 when Miss Jones in the Morning was replaced by the syndicated Big Boy’s Neighborhood.

Looking back at Martinez’s exit, she described Hot 97 as “asleep at the wheel” while Power capitalized on its opening.
