DJ Envy’s former business partner Cesar Humberto Pina, who billed himself as a real estate influencer by the name of Flipping NJ, has pleaded guilty to engaging in a real estate investment fraud scheme.
As the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey detailed in a statement shared on Thursday (Oct. 22), Pina pleaded guilty before Judge Madeline Cox Arleo in Newark to charges of wire fraud, money laundering conspiracy, bribery of an agent of a program receiving federal funds, and travel act bribery. In his legal case, which was first levelled against him in 2023, he was accused of running an investment fraud scheme, laundering money for drug traffickers, and bribing a politician from New Jersey.
“Cesar Pina admitted to misappropriating millions of dollars meant for real estate investments, laundering cash for narcotics traffickers, and bribing a politician in furtherance of real estate projects,” U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer said. “It is hard to imagine a more varied spate of criminal activity, which robbed investors of their life savings, helped facilitate drug trafficking, and undermined confidence in our elected officials. As this prosecution demonstrates, this Office will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to root out and prosecute complex schemes of all types.”
Pina previously partnered with DJ Envy to hold real estate seminars across the country, building a sizable following on social media. As part of his scheme, he would promise to provide potential investors with at least 30 percent returns on their investments in less than a year. However, he didn’t use the funds as promised and misappropriated the money to pay off previous investors in a sort of Ponzi scheme. DJ Envy denied involvement in the real estate scam.
Pina is scheduled to be sentenced on March 10, 2027. The charge of wire fraud carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, money laundering 20 years, bribery 10 years, and interstate commerce five years. He is also facing upwards of $1 million in fines in connection with all four charges, although he’s likely to get a more lenient sentence for pleading guilty.
