Key Takeaways

  • Dr. Dre named Larry Smith "the greatest hip-hop producer ever" on Ice Cube and Mike Epps' new podcast, Listen & Laugh, arguing that Smith never got his flowers.
  • Dre credited Smith's work with Whodini and Run-DMC for inspiring his generation, while Ice Cube admitted he expected Dre to pick Quincy Jones.

Dr. Dre has taken a moment to give props to the person he thinks is the greatest hip-hop producer of all time.

Appearing on the debut episode of Ice Cube and Mike Epps' new podcast, Listen & Laugh, the legendary hitmaker was asked to name his favorite producer during a discussion about Quincy Jones.

"I can't say there's one specifically, but if I had to name one that really inspired me — outside of Quincy Jones — I would have to say it's Larry Smith," Dre said around the 0:10:30 mark in the video below. "Larry Smith does not get his flowers. Larry Smith to me is the greatest hip-hop producer ever."

After Ice Cube clarified with the Aftermath boss that he was talking about greatest "hip-hop" producer, Dre went on to break down the history of Smith's contributions to music.

"He did Whodini, he did Run-DMC. All of the music that inspired us when we was coming up, that was like, 'Okay, I wanna do that' — Larry Smith," Dre told Cube before also naming Fat Boys, LL Cool J, and Kurtis Blow among the artists Smith worked with.

"He did all of those records that inspired us when we were young," he continued. "But he just never got his flowers. Larry Smith. Larry Smith is the fucking best hip-hop producer ever, point blank."

Ice Cube spoke about being surprised by Dre's answer in a new interview with Complex on the set of Listen & Laugh. "I never knew that was a guy that he really looked up to as one of the best that ever did it," Cube said. "I thought he was going to say Quincy Jones. You know, the usual. So I learned that about him."
