Dr. Dre has shared his thoughts on AI and its use in music — and his take might surprise some people.
Speaking on the debut episode of Listen & Laugh, the new podcast by Ice Cube and Mike Epps, the legendary producer shared that he's not opposed to artificial intelligence — at all. In fact, he thinks anyone that is just isn't creative enough.
"I'm extremely excited about AI," Dre told the show's hosts around the 28-minute mark of the video below. "I love it. I love the potential of it. I love the idea of where it could possibly go with music, with film. What happens if someone says, 'I'm gonna pay you, Cube, to be in my movie, right? You don't even have to be there, but you get to approve what they do. It's your image and your voice. What's wrong with that? It's just a whole new level of creativity."
He then added: "I think the only people that are gonna be mad about the elevation of AI are the people who aren't that creative."
Ice Cube then asked Dre if he would feel a type of way if a producer went into a studio and used AI to copy his style of mixing. "No,” he replied, "because as a creative force and as an innovator, I could not be mad at that. I would respect that."
Dre went on to compare the use of AI to sampling, explaining that there would be no "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" without sampling. "[What] if someone made ''G' Thang,' remade it, and made it bigger than Dr.Dre and Snoop Dogg?" Cube asked Dre, to which Dre replied: "I would love that because that is a part of creativity and innovation, right?"
He continued: "This is just a whole new level of creativity that we have to get used to. You have to get used to it or you're gonna be left behind."
Ice Cube has been very vocal about not being a fan of AI tools. In 2023, he called AI-generated music "demonic" during an appearance on the Full Send Podcast.
During the conversation with Dre, Cube clarified that he's not opposed to modern tools like AI being in the hands of "creators," but what bothers him is "that somebody who never would think about doing what it takes to make a great record" could just use AI as a shortcut to create something that has taken an artist years to master.
"Why do you give a fuck about how we made records opposed to how the new generation is making them?" Dre asked Cube. "What if that is just something new? This is what happens with guys that are our age. It's like we don't wanna take the time to learn a new technology so we have a problem with the way they're doing things."
Cube responded by explaining that his beef is with computers taking "total control" of the creative process. The pair continued going and forth on the matter before ultimately agreeing to disagree.
