Timbaland Thinks Only a Few Artists Are Big Enough to Face Beyoncé in a Verzuz Battle

Destiny’s Child vs. solo Beyoncé? An interviewer floated the Verzuz matchup, but Timbaland thought the idea was too small.

Key Takeaways

  • Timbaland said only a few artists could match Beyoncé’s stature in a Verzuz battle but declined to name names: “I’ll let y’all figure it out.”
  • When an interviewer suggested Beyoncé battle herself—Destiny’s Child versus her solo catalog—the Verzuz co-founder replied, “Maybe that, then.”
  • The hypothetical showdown could pit “Say My Name” and “Survivor” against “Crazy in Love” and “Formation,” with Renaissance and Cowboy Carter expanding the options.

Who could possibly go hit-for-hit with Beyoncé in a Verzuz battle? According to Timbaland, a few artists could give her a run for her money, but he's keeping their identities to himself. The legendary producer and Verzuz co-founder recently reacted to an interviewer's suggestion that Queen Bey could battle herself, pitting her Destiny's Child catalog against the solo hits that made her one of music's biggest superstars.

And considering the amount of material she has to work with, there wouldn't exactly be a shortage of records to choose from.

During an interview with Culture Creators at its Homecoming event, Timbaland was asked who could realistically challenge Beyoncé in a Verzuz matchup. "I don't know what would Beyoncé do, but I think it would probably be somebody just as big as her," he explained.

Although he acknowledged that a few artists could meet that standard, he didn’t want to reveal his picks. "I'll let y'all figure it out," he said when pressed for names.

That's when the conversation took an interesting turn. An interviewer suggested that Beyoncé could battle herself, with her Destiny's Child years competing against her solo career.

The concept would also allow different phases of her musical evolution to go head-to-head. "Because each artist evolves," the interviewer explained.

“I think you thinking small,” Timbaland replied.

Still, Beyoncé certainly has enough hits to make the hypothetical matchup interesting. Destiny's Child delivered era-defining records including "No, No, No," "Bills, Bills, Bills," "Say My Name," "Independent Women Part I," and "Survivor."

Then Beyoncé launched a solo career, producing "Crazy in Love," "Baby Boy," "Irreplaceable," "Single Ladies," "Drunk in Love," and "Formation," among countless others.

That's before getting into the Renaissance and Cowboy Carter eras, which introduced another generation of listeners to her music.

Timbaland's opinion carries weight beyond his status as a hitmaking producer. He co-founded Verzuz with Swizz Beatz in 2020, turning a pandemic-era Instagram Live competition into a celebration of hip-hop and R&B history.

He's also worked with Beyoncé and Jay-Z throughout his career, contributing to records including "Grown Woman" and "Big Pimpin'."

Beyoncé's musical range has also been making headlines recently. Rolling Stone named her Jack White collaboration "Don't Hurt Yourself" the 46th-greatest rock song of the 21st century, ranking it alongside recordings by OutKast, Prince, and Jay-Z.

Her husband earned the highest ranking among Black artists with "99 Problems" at No. 8.
