The LeBron James era with the Los Angeles Lakers appears to be over. On Tuesday, ESPN’s Shams Charania posted on X, “LeBron James will continue his NBA career for the 2026-27 season and has informed the Los Angeles Lakers that the franchise can move on without him because he will play elsewhere, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul tells ESPN.”
NBA free agency officially begins at 6 p.m. ET today.
There will be plenty of interest in the 41-year-old as LeBron is still a highly productive player, having averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists this past season with the Lakers.
Here is a look at five potential landing spots for “The King.”
LeBron James to the Cavaliers rumors
LeBron finishing his career with the team that drafted him 23 years ago would be the ultimate Disney ending. On the court, LeBron to the Cavs makes perfect sense, as well.
The small forward position is the only real weak spot in the Cavs’ starting lineup as they had to trot out the likes of Dean Wade at the position in key games last postseason.
A starting five of LeBron, Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen would be, arguably, the best starting unit in the NBA.
Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman would have to work some crazy salary cap gymnastics in order to sign LeBron outright, but a reunion between “The King” and “The Land” is a strong possibility.
LeBron James to the Warriors rumors
This one has the most smoke at the moment. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Monday that the Warriors are planning a pursuit of LeBron in free agency and Anthony Davis via trade. These moves are now possible given the fact that Draymond Green declined his $27.6 million player option on Monday.
Green, LeBron and Davis are all represented by Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul.
LeBron and Green, who are tight, have often stated a desire to play with one another. Davis and LeBron won a title together with the Lakers in 2020 and remain friends. And LeBron has been vocal in his praise for Stephen Curry and has floated the possibility of playing with him.
Of note, LeBron also played for Warriors head coach Steve Kerr in Team USA’s run to Olympic gold in 2024.
LeBron James to the Spurs rumors
If LeBron is truly focused on winning one more championship in his storied career, San Antonio would likely give him his best opportunity. The young Spurs are in desperate need of a veteran presence with championship experience.
LeBron would fit in perfectly to a cast that includes Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and De’Aaron Fox.
Financially, this could work as well, as San Antonio has its full $15 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception to dangle.
In addition, LeBron and Spurs president Gregg Popovich have maintained a close relationship over the years.
LeBron James to the Heat rumors
This one had no chance two weeks ago. Today, it most definitely does considering Giannis Antetokounmpo is now in South Beach and legit title contention for Miami is possible.
LeBron has long respected Giannis, and he has a tight relationship with Bam Adebayo from their Olympic run together. “The King” also has a deep appreciation for longtime Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, as he called Spo “one of the greatest coaches of all-time” last fall.
One overlooked aspect of a Heat–LeBron reunion is the fact that Pat Riley and Miami know how to handle a retirement tour properly. The Heat gave LeBron’s buddy Dwyane Wade a legendary, season-long sendoff in 2018-19, and no doubt LeBron was taking notes.
LeBron to the Knicks rumors
If the Knicks had fallen short of breaking their lengthy championship drought this year, LeBron to the Knicks would have some serious legs right now.
The champion Knicks don’t need LeBron. But if he’s firmly focused on chasing another ring, why not join the reigning champs?
LeBron maintains a relationship with Knicks head coach Mike Brown, as Brown coached LeBron in Cleveland from 2005-10. This past winter, Brown called LeBron “the smartest guy I’ve been around, in terms of feel and all that stuff.”
Of note, the Lakers are currently in hot pursuit of free agent Mitchell Robinson, so a sign-and-trade involving Robinson and LeBron would make sense—if the Knicks were actually interested in obtaining “The King.”
This one has a 0.000023 percent chance of actually happening, but, then again, it seems like anything is possible in the NBA right now.
