See How This Pair of Miami Artists Recreates 'The Last Supper' in the First Avant Guards Documentary

Art has the uncanny ability to bring people together. So it makes sense that assembling different artists to work on a bigger idea in collaboration only maximizes the probability that the final piece will resonate. Bombay Sapphire and Complex recently teamed up in three different cities across the U.S. to put this theory to work in our latest offering, The Avant Guards. In this documentary series, we chose two artists who represent different strengths and invited them to join forces on something bigger, fresher, and more unified.

Our first stop was none other than Miami, Haitian-inspired street artist Nate Dee’s hometown. We met up with him and Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series winner Becky Rosa, a rising name in surrealist pop art. With mixed specialties, Rosa and Dee came together to create their updated version of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.”

Choosing photography as their medium, the duo updated the classic renaissance work, bringing a modern day feel that seems more at home in a Kanye West video than on an Italian church wall. Their updated take, reflecting what Dee describes as “the idea of commercialism...where I live,” evokes the tension between having a home that is yours but also the world’s. All proceeds of the work are set to go towards the relief efforts for Hurricane Matthew in Haiti. Check out the documentary above and see how these two complementary forces came together.
