Britain announced its plans to put a visual artist on its next £20 note two months ago, and while Alexander McQueen was considered a likely candidate by oddsmakers, nothing was official. However, the nomination period just closed and McQueen has been unveiled, along with 435 other deceased artists, as an official candidate for the currency, i-D reports.

The nomination period saw the Bank of England's chief cashier Victoria Cleland listen to input from the British public. "I am delighted with the number of nominations we have received, and appreciative of the public's engagement in this new initiative," Cleland said, according to Dazed. "The fact that so many visual artists have been put forward underlines the extent of British achievement in the visual arts and reinforces why this field deserves to be recognized on the next £20 note."

In addition to McQueen, other notable nominees include Thomas Burberry, the founder of Burberry; designer Jean Muir; artists Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Richard Hamilton, and Pauline Boty; and directors Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, and Tony Scott.

We will have to wait until Spring 2016 to find who is chosen for the currency, and another three to five before it goes into circulation.
