In A Kind of Woman, the new short film by Matthew Donaldson, Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto discusses his coincidental journey into the fashion world and starting his own line. Yamamoto launched his first collection of womenswear called Y's in 1977 to fulfill his desire to start designing "mannish" clothing for women.
Yamamoto also says he was always searching for independent women, so in addition to the interview Nowness names three of the early muses to the designer. The list includes Charlotte Rampling, Pina Bausch and Rei Kawakubo, the genius behind COMME des GARÇONS. In the early 70s, Yamamoto and Kawakubo were romantically involved with people often referring to the couple as "the Monk and the Nun."
Yamamoto presented his latest womenswear Fall/Winter 2015 collection yesterday at Paris Fashion Week.
