Musicians, especially those within the hip hop realm, have had a long-time obsession with jewelry. The chains, watches, studs, and bracelets have been used as status symbols to remind everyone the artist has “made it.” But these these accessories can tell us a lot more about an artist, other than how much money they have, which is exactly why The Fader decided to interview 11 jewelry-rocking musicians at The FADER FORT Presented by Converse last week.

Artists like A$AP Ant, Trae Tha Truth, and OG Maco dished about their favorite pieces, and it turns out, almost every item had a backstory. Some were given as gifts from loved-ones, while others even gave insight to the wearer’s physical health, which was the case with T-Pain, who said he no longer wears big chains due to the discomfort.

“My chains are getting a lot smaller. I'm getting a lot more out of shape than I was, so can't really carry around a big ass chain no more,” T-Pain told The Fader. “That shit was 15 lbs, it was terrible. It was like carrying a small child around for you whole goddamn tour. That's not a life I want to live anymore.”

Other items, like Dej Loaf’s IBGM necklace, held deeper meanings and represented a lifestyle as well as a way of thinking.

“My IBGM chain means 'I Been Gettin Money'. It was actually given to me by my manager Charlie,” Dej Loaf said. “It really just represents what we believe in, it's about not being selfish, and being used to things, so we don't mind giving things. Like, him giving me this chain. I didn't ask for it, I just got it. I mean that's what it's about. When you're used to things, you don't mind helping out.”
