Take even the most cursory glance at the work of Chris Burkard and it’s hard to believe that he wasn’t born with a camera in his hand. Though artistry has been a lifelong endeavor—growing up he could often be found painting or sketching—it wasn’t until the age of 19 when the self-taught photographer first picked up a camera.
“Basically, I realized that I didn’t want to be stuck out on some hillside somewhere with an easel or taking reference photos and then going back to a studio,” says the 28-year-old adventure photographer. “I wanted to be out in the field—on the top of a mountain or in the water… I wanted to take pictures of these places that I was hiking to and spending my weekends.”
Less than a decade later, Burkard has gained an enormous fan base for his energetic body of work, which is regularly punctuated with images of surfers in action, coastal scenes, breathtaking landscapes, and action-oriented adventure shots. He has seen his work published around the world and he’s been awarded a host of honors, including three Red Bull Illume awards, which makes Burkard the perfect person to offer advice for budding adventure photographers. We spoke to Burkard and got his 10 tips on how to get the shot.
