Last night at Christie's was one for the history books. The auction house hosted their Post War & Contemporary Evening Sale and surpassed their estimates, ending the evening with a record breaking $853 million in sales, way up from the previous $745 million sale this past May. According to the Wall Street Journal, several artists bested their own sale records, including Ed Ruscha, Peter Doig, Georg Baselitz, Cindy Sherman and Cy Twombly. Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama became the "most expensive living female artist at auction," with the $7.1 million sale of White No. 28 (above).
Other notable sales include Andy Warhol's Triple Elvis [Ferus Type] and Four Marlons which went for $82 million and $70 million respectively, Francis Bacon's Seated Figure which sold for $45 million, Jeff Koons' Balloon Monkey (Orange) which brought in $26 million.

Of the 80 works featured in the auction, only five failed to sell, including Roy Lichtenstein's Keds.
