Jean-Michel Basquiat fans in and around Brooklyn will have the opportunity to view eight of his personal notebooks in an exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum next April.
Titled "Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks," the exhibition will center around the rare books, created between 1980 and 1987, that have never before been shown publicly. The 160 pages from the notebooks have been unbound and will be exhibited along with 30 paintings, drawings, and mixed media works from private collections and the artist's estate.
According to the Brooklyn Museum's exhibition page, this will be the first major exhibition of Basquiat's notebooks, and each contains "poetry fragments, word play, sketches, and personal observations ranging from street life and popular culture to themes of race, class, and world history." They also feature sketches and elements that appear in the artist's paintings, including faces, skeletons, and the iconic crowns.
