Throughout time, the moon, mysterious and unreachable, has been the inspiration for art. In more recent history, artists have incorporated the celestial being into their work. Ai Weiwei and Olafur Eliasson created "MOON," a digital project where Internet users can draw graffiti on a virtual moon. For "The Republic of the Moon," a group of artists in London imagined what would happen if we colonized the moon. Now, Swedish artist Mikael Genbergis actually trying to launch his artwork into space.
Genberg's "Moonhouse," a decade-long project in the making, would be the first artwork to land on the lunar orb. "Moonhouse" is just what it sounds like—a house on the moon, and a pretty boring one at that. While Genberg's piece may not be the most exciting work of art ever created, its journey into space sure beats sitting in a gallery.
"Moonhouse" was made possible by crowdfunding, and it is scheduled to blast off Oct. 2015 on SpaceX's Falcon 9. Designed by Astrobotic, the self-assembling structure measures 9 square meters.
