New Zealand-based artist Jamie Harkins sees your sand castle and raises you...

…incredible three-dimensional works of sand art.

With the help of some of his friends, Harkins has turned the beaches near his studio into optical illusions. Many of his works are summer-themed, featuring sailboats, castles, and swimmers. Other more ambitious pieces feature strange staircases reminiscent of M. C. Escher and skateboard terrain parks.

Unlike artwork rendered in other mediums, these don't stick around very long. “I kind of like the fact that it disappears at the end of the day when the tide comes in. It makes it impermanent,” the artist told the New Zealand Herald.
