In New York City last night, the ball dropped in Times Square, as it has for 107 years now, and thousands upon thousands of revelers showed up to witness the event. But to be harnessed in and contained by the iron gates that keep those very crowds safe from themselves, an entire mobilized police force is necessary.

One intrepid photographer, Aymann Ismail, at Animal New York took to the streets yesterday to take portraits of that police force. He writes: “To get close to the hubbub, I had to travel underground through a subway station, as the only people being allowed in were ticket-holding theatergoers. The officers were split in their temperament: for every cop that called me an asshole, there was another who posed for the camera.”
