The museum dedicated to living artists, the New Museum in New York City, has announced its complete 2014 exhibition schedule, through to January 2015. Currently, nine complete shows are planned for the coming calendar year. Here’s a brief rundown of the schedule, as it currently stands:
January 22 – April 6
“Museum as Hub: Report on the Construction of a Spaceship Module”
Curated by Tranzit; organized by Lauren Cornell
The international collective known as Tranzit will take inspiration from the 1963 Czech science-fiction film Ikarie XB-1 to transform the New Museum’s fifth-floor gallery into the simulated interior of a spaceship. Surrounding this will be more than 50 works of art in various mediums.
February 12 – April 20
Pawel Althamer
Curated by Massimiliano Gioni & Gary Carrion-Murayari
The first US museum exhibition of Althamer’s work will show on three floors of the museum. This exhibition will feature not only the artist’s most recent set of sculptures, the Venetians, but also an entire gallery that will accumulate drawings and paintings by patrons and coordinated community organizations, melding social practice with fine art
Laure Prouvost
Curated by Margot Norton
The first US solo exhibition of Prouvost’s work. Prouvost will create a massive video installation for the museum’s lobby gallery, working in the disruption of meaning in language and image.
April 23 – June 25
Jeanine Oleson
Curated by Johanna Burton
Throughout these months, Oleson—who works in the “affective role of voice”—will take over the fifth floor of the museum for performances and public events, including the development of a new experimental opera, as well as interactive pieces concerning public engagement.
May 7 – June 22
Ragnar Kjartansson
Curated by Massimiliano Gioni & Margot Norton
Spawning from a tradition of theater, film, music and literature, Kjartansson will present a durational performance and video piece titled Take Me Here By The Dishwasher—Memorial for a Marriage. Ten guitarists will continuously play a live soundtrack for the entirety of the exhibition.
Roberto Cuoghi
Curated by Massimiliano Gioni & Margot Norton
Cuoghi’s work will showcase the results of a two-year study of Assyrian ritual. He will present, in part, a sound installation created using handmade instruments he built himself.
Camille Henrot
Curated by Massimiliano Gioni & Gary Carrion-Murayari
This solo exhibition of the digital-age artist will include her staggering Grosse Fatigue video piece, which won the Silver Lion Award at the 55th Venice Biennale, as well as a number of ikebana sculptures and works on paper.
July 16 – September 28
“Yalla”
Curated by Massimiliano Gioni with Gary Carrion-Murayari, Margot Norton, & Natalie Bell
This group exhibition focuses on art about and from the Arab world, the largest of its kind in the US to date.
October 1 – January 2015
Chris Ofili
The first solo US museum exhibition of Ofili will take up the three main galleries of the New Museum. Ofili, who consistently juxtaposes binaries in his vibrant works of drawing, painting and sculpture, will present works from the breadth of his varied career.
