Smell Like Jay Z This Winter When He Releases His First Cologne

Jay Z introduces his first cologne ever as part of the new Barneys New York collaboration.

Prepare yourself; a Jay Z cologne is coming this winter. The latest item to be added in the Jay Z x Barneys NY collection is the announcement of Gold, Shawn Carter’s own brand of cologne. While celebrity fragrances are nothing new, this is Jay Z’s first in the smell-goods market. And he went through 3,200 possible names before settling on the only metal that matters.

The packaging is wrapped up in a box that looks like a gold brick. The bottle is all white with a gold topper and letterings. According to Donald J. Loftus, president of Parlux Ltd. and executive vice president of Perfumania Inc., Jay Z happened on the name after picking the product up and declared ‘‘This is the shit; it’s gold.” Which must be true, because sometimes the best names don’t really require deep thoughts and scientific SEO research.

But what about the actual scent? If you've always wanted to know what Jay Z smells like, here's a breakdown:

Top: "The brightness of Sicilian Bergamot and ginger warmed with Cardamom."
Mid: "Masculine vetiver and teak wood mingle with the spice of pink pepper."
Base: "Rich amber and sensual myrrh are smoothed with bourbon vanilla."

WWD reports that there will be a big push to make it known that this is the new new fragrance that you must cop to get the ladies knocking on your door.  After being rolled out at Barneys, the distribution will follow in other big name retailers. The most interesting part of the media blitz will be a Macy’s window display, which will feature “an image of Jay Z, morphing into gold neck chain.“ We already know that’s going to get a couple minds blown.

Amidst the chaos that’s surrounding the stoppage of Jay Z’s collaboration with Barneys NY, there is no slowing down one of the most anticipated collections for the holidays. Items are being revealed each week, and the product train is not stopping until it hits the stores. Look for the cologne at Barneys NY on November 20, and then a nationwide release will follow at stores like Macys, Sephora, Nordstrom, Dillards, Belks, Bon-Ton, and Ulta. Price points start at $39 and tops of at $79.
