A statue of the Soviet army in Bulgaria was vandalised recently with "Prague pink" paint. Built in 1954, the controversial monument has been defaced multiple times in the past, most notably in 2011 when protestors painted the soldiers as comic book characters, Ronald McDonald, and Santa Claus.
This incident coincided with the 45th anniversary of Soviet troops that ended the liberalisation period known as the "Prague Spring" in Czechoslovakia. The captions below the monument translate to "Prague '68" and "Bulgaria apologizes," referring to Bulgaria's participation in the invasion on August 20 and 21 of 1968. A lot of people protest the monument's existence, so we don't think this will be the last time it receives a makeover.
