Design studio Dorothyhas already impressed us once with their release of "The Colour of Song", a graphic print inspired by music. Recently, the team has completed a series of "Hollywood Star Charts" based on real night skies, envisioning some of the most acclaimed American films and stars creating constellations. Selections for movies featured in the prints were based on those that have been recognized by the U.S. National Film Preservation Board, and those that have won Academy Awards.
If you would like to go as far back into history as 1927, the "Golden Age Star Chart" imagines the stars as seen in the Los Angeles night sky on October 6 of that year, the day that Al Jolson's famed movie The Jazz Singer had its first screening. From On the Waterfront, Casablanca, Rebel Without a Cause, and Rear Window, to King Kong and The Wizard of OZ, among the included 62 films, you will spot many of your favorite classics along with their stars—the actors, actresses, producers, and directors.
Jumping ahead a few decades, the "Modern Day Star Chart" depicts the constellations viewed in the New York night sky on June 16, 1960, the day Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho was first shown. With 108 films including Easy Rider, Bonnie and Clyde, The Godfather, Chinatown, Pulp Fiction, and even Avatar, the print maps out a stellar history of Hollywood films, from then to now.
While constellations in skies are becoming less visible with light and air pollution, the "Hollywood Star Charts" give us a different type of star clusters to enjoy.
