Brazil has an unmatched record of having won the World Cup five times, and is the only national team to have participated in all tournaments since the event's founding in 1930. Preparing to host the much-anticipated 20th World Cup in 2014, Brazil sets a sustainable standard by installing solar panels on its stadium's roofs.

While the nation originally aimed to fit all of its 12 World Cup stadiums with solar roofs, with time restraints, the goal has been lowered to complete construction on seven of the venues. The first soccer stadium to have recently completed its solar roof installation of 1.4 MW is the Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte, built in 1965. Next up is the Mané Garrincha stadium in Brasilia, which will be equipped with a 2.5MW solar roof that can collect enough power for almost half of the stadium. The solar panels are also designed to function with the larger energy grid instead of limiting its use to the fields.
