An exhibit at the 2013 Saint-Étienne Design Biennial features an installation of colorful, pastel-toned wooden tables. The "Colored-Pencil Table" by Japanese studio Nendo was created using surfaces finished by a process called udukuri, which removes the top layer of the cypress wood and leaves the wood grain underneath exposed. The tables were then covered with paper and shaded in with colored pencils, resulting in patterns where wooden textures are highlighted. Who says it has to be just an installation, though? We could imagine some or all of these tables making their way into a living room.
