The body of a former NFL player, wide receiver James Hardy III, was found after he had been reported missing a week ago. Hardy's body was discovered by a Fort Wayne, Indiana city employee, who spotted it in the Maumee River.
The 31-year-old Hardy was a Fort Wayne native who played at Indiana University. In college he was a freshman All-American, two-time all conference player, and also a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist (which goes to the top WR in the nation). As a senior in high school, he also was the runner-up for the state's Mr. Basketball and (accordingly) played for two seasons on the IU hoops team.
Hardy's pro career, like many players before him, wasn't quite as successful. He was drafted in the second round by the Bills in the 2008 draft, but he made just 10 receptions in two seasons there. The team put out a tweet today mourning his death:
In 2014, Hardy was arrested after a confrontation with three cops from the Los Angeles Police Department. He was charged with "felony resisting arrest," after two of the officers involved were injured. According to TMZ, he was remanded to a psychiatric ward after a judge deemed him unfit to stand trial.
According to Rolling Stone, the death is currently being investigated by the FWPD, as well as the Allen County Coroner's Office, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, to figure out what was the cause of it.
