The celebrity trend that seems to be very in right now is paying for students' college tuition/student loans. Think of it as the spiritual successor to pop stars and Hollywood starlets taking losers to prom.

The most recent public figure to get in on this craze is none other than Seahawks cornerback/loudmouth Richard Sherman, who's following through on a promise he made to a high school senior in Virginia named Hershai James. Sherman told James at a charity dinner last year that if she obtained a 3.0 GPA, and subsequently made the honor roll, that he'd personally bankroll her college education.

“At the dinner when Richard Sherman came to me about the scholarship, I was in shock. I believe I said ‘Really?’ for reassurance,” James said, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “I just felt so blessed to have been given the wonderful opportunity.”

News of her getting that 3.0 made it back to Sherman, who thankfully remembered his pledge. "It goes back to knowledge is power and if you have knowledge you’re going to be as powerful as you ever want to be," he said.

Now he (or probably his accountant) will be making out checks to Virginia's Norfolk State, as that's the institution James has chosen to attend next year. Seems like a good trend, though a better one would be if college were more affordable, you know, so we didn't have to hit up celebrities to help cover the costs in the future.
