Blue Jays third baseman Chris Coghlan was standing in the on-deck circle back in 2011 when his Marlins teammate Scott Cousins ran over Giants catcher Buster Posey at home plate and broke his leg. That play led MLB to institute a rule prohibiting catchers from blocking the plate—and it also eventually led to Coghlan pulling off one of the most acrobatic plays you’ll ever see on a baseball field.

During the Blue Jays/Cardinals game in St. Louis on Tuesday night, Coghlan was on first base when his teammate Kevin Pillar hit a triple. Coghlan raced around the bases and decided that he was going to try and score on the play. Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty threw a dart towards home that easily beat Coghlan and probably should have resulted in him being out at the plate. But as Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina collected the ball, Coghlan decided that he was going to do whatever it took to score a run for his team. So he jumped and dove headfirst over Molina and touched home before Molina could tag him:

After the game, Coghlan explained that the play back in 2011 influenced his decision, even though he literally had to make it on the fly.

"I could have run him over because he’s right in the middle and there’s no place to go," he said. "I was there the day Buster got busted up and you don’t ever want to see that happen to anyone, but at the end of the day, I’ve got to score that run."

If the play looks like something straight out of a movie, that’s because it is. As Mashable pointed out, Willie Mays Hayes did the same thing to score a run in Major League II.
