On Sunday, Kansas City Chiefs rookie wide receiver Tyreek Hill returned his second career punt return for a touchdown against the San Diego Chargers, and no one was more heartbroken about it than Minnesota Vikings cornerback Marcus Sherels.
With the 95-yard return, Hill bumped up his punt return average on the season to 15.1 yards, easily surpassing Sherels, who previously held the lead with 13.9 yards per return. According to ESPN's Field Yates, if Sherels held the top spot at the end of the 2016 campaign, he would've received a $100,000 bonus.
Earlier this year, Sherels signed a modest two-year, $4 million deal with the Vikings. With the six-year NFL veteran set to make just $2 million this season, the additional $100,000 would've been a nice little bonus. However, the sensational rookie out of West Alabama had to go and break his heart.
At least Sherels can take solace in having some company when it comes to players who fell short of hitting a certain milestone in order to receive a bonus, including Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri and Los Angeles Rams tight end Lance Kendricks.
