The NFL, or No Fun League, has decided to not fine Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott for jumping into the Salvation Army kettle after scoring a touchdown in Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While the decision was a smart, albeit rare, one for the league, New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. isn't as pleased as everyone else for Elliott's lack of a punishment for his excessive touchdown celebration.Â
In October, NFL senior V.P. of officiating Dean Blandino released a list of touchdown celebrations that will not be permitted, which included "using any other props." A Salvation Army kettle would be considered a prop, no?
In Week 1, the Giants star wideout and his teammate, Victor Cruz, received a $12,000 fine for their touchdown celebration against the Cowboys.Â
While Beckham and Cruz's display could fall under "choreographed celebrations" on the list of prohibited touchdown celebrations, it makes sense why OBJ would have an issue with the NFL's decision in this scenario when Elliott's actions were much more over-the-top. Sure, handing down a fine on Zeke could've led to a PR disaster, but the league needs to be more consistent, instead of picking and choosing their battles.Â
If Beckham Jr. scores a touchdown this Thursday against the Philadelphia Eagles, don't be surprised to see him push the limits of the NFL's touchdown celebration rules. After all, if the league is going to let Elliott get away with what he did last night, who knows what else they'll let slide.Â
