During the Rams’ appearance on HBO’s Hard Knocks back in August, Jeff Fisher prophetically told his team that he was not going to finish 7-9 after kicking a player off the squad for bringing a girl up to his dorm room. "I’m not fucking going 7-9," he said. "Or 8-8. Or 9-7. Or 10-6, for that matter."

As it turns out, he was right. Fisher didn’t go 7-9 or 8-8 or 9-7 or 10-6 this season. He went 4-9—and was fired by the Rams on Monday afternoon before he could finish out the season. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen was the first to report the news:

The Rams followed up Mort’s report by releasing a statement:

The news comes less than 24 hours after the Rams were beat down at home by the Falcons 42-14. It also comes just one week after Fisher signed a contract extension with Los Angeles. Oh, and as Twitter has been all too happy to point out, it comes just as Fisher pulled to within just one loss of setting a new NFL record for most losses by an NFL coach:

Fisher was 31-45 in five seasons with the Rams. As expected, one of Fisher's biggest critics, Eric Dickerson, doesn't feel bad about him receiving the ax. "I am not shocked. I think it's something that had to happen. You have the players giving up on you; you have to make a change," Dickerson told The Herd. "I am not hating on Jeff. I am not mad at him. But I can't feel sorry for a guy who's made $35 million coaching. He'll be OK. It is what it is."

As for who Dickerson would like to see as the Rams' next head coach, he wants Jim Harbaugh. "Not about who's carrying biggest stick; it's about who's winning," Dickerson said on his show on AM 570 L.A. Sports. "Jim Harbaugh is that guy."
