The 76ers have formally apologized to Sevyn Streeter, the R&B singer who was scheduled to sing the national anthem before Philadelphia's season opener against the Thunder on Wednesday night. According to the singer, the Sixers pulled the plug on her performance after they found out she was going to wear a jersey that said "We Matter" on the front of it.
It led to a lot of backlash from angry fans, and ultimately, it forced the team to issue an apology. The Sixers have also reportedly invited Streeter back to sing the national anthem before a game of her choice at some time in the near future:
In a statement released on Friday afternoon, the team said they thought twice about canceling Streeter's performance after getting feedback from "our players, basketball operations staff, and ownership group." They also said "Sevyn should have been welcomed to sing." You can read the full statement below:
The Sixers are currently waiting to hear back from Streeter. She has not revealed whether or not she will take the team up on their new offer.
