A Nevada Returner Accidentally Took a Safety on a Kickoff and Completely Disoriented the Referees

Who messed up more: the returner or the officials?

Nevada didn't have much of a chance against Notre Dame this weekend. The Fighting Irish, loaded with talent and probably angry after losing to Texas last week, were 28-point favorites. The Wolfpack couldn't afford to make mental blunders—but they made an especially big one on a kick return in the second quarter.

With Notre Dame leading 9-0 and kicking off after scoring its first touchdown of the game, Nevada kick returner Ahki Muhammad thought a little too much about whether or not to return the kick, and ended up taking a safety.

Because he entered the field of play and then returned to the end zone, by rule, it is a safety. After conferring on that rule, however, there was some confusion between the two referees near the play. One signaled touchback, then the other signaled safety. Then the first referee switched his signal to safety.

OOOF.

Confusion for all parties involved. Notre Dame leads by 36 in the fourth quarter, and this game is all but over. The good news for Nevada: they don't have to play Notre Dame every week. They're back home next week against a much more comparable opponent in Buffalo.
