Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner and Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig have a history of getting into it on the baseball field. Late Monday night, they added to that history by nearly igniting a bench-clearing brawl during the seventh inning of a Giants/Dodgers game.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Bumgarner got Puig to ground out to first base to end the inning. Then, as he made his way towards the San Francisco dugout, Bumgarner inexplicably got into a shouting match with Puig and told him not to look at him as he walked by. Puig responded by, of course, looking at him and yelling back. Their conversation went something like this:
And that led to players from both teams running out onto the field to join the war of words that Bumgarner and Puig started.
Fortunately, that’s about as far as it got. No punches were thrown, and eventually, cooler heads prevailed. But it got tense for a few moments, and after it was all said and done, Dodgers play-by-play announcer Vin Scully provided viewers at home with this excellent breakdown of what happened:
The Dodgers ended up winning the game 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a walk-off double from Adrian Gonzalez.
