J.J. Watt is a beast, but he can only play through so many beatings like this one on the gridiron without them taking their toll. The Houston Texans' star defensive linebacker and three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year re-injured his back during his team's Week 3 loss to the Patriots.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the four-time Pro Bowler tweaked his back so bad that the timetable on his return is indefinite. There is now a strong possibility that Watt's back injury could kept him sidelined for the rest of this season. The Texans have reportedly placed Watt on their Injured Reserve list. Also, in the wake of Watt being out for an extended period of time, the team has signed defensive end Antonio Smith.
The injury is a recurring one for Watt, who underwent surgery for a herniated disk in July. The surgery caused Watt to miss the entire preseason.
Watt has had his share of injuries that he played through over his career, namely last season when he claimed to have played through five torn core muscles.
Since the 2016 season began, Watt has only recorded 1.5 sacks. He was the 2014 NFL MVP runner-up, and has snagged 76 sacks since 2011, the most of any player in the league over that period.
