One of the first things Dez Bryant bought after he signed a five-year, $70 million contract last summer was a pet monkey. Much like his fellow pro athlete Anthony Davis—who also purchased a pet monkey after signing a big contract—the Cowboys wide receiver bought the baby monkey, named him Dallas, and showed him off on Instagram. And the monkey was sooooooo adorable.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like Bryant knew what he was getting himself into when he brought Dallas home. Monkeys can be a lot of work (which is what PETA tried to tell Bryant shortly after he got the monkey). Too much work for a guy who is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. So during an interview with KTCK-AM 1310 The Ticket on Thursday, Bryant revealed that, sadly, he was forced to give Dallas away to a friend who lives out in the country. Bryant said he still gets to see the monkey but that he no longer hangs out with the monkey on a regular basis. However, he did point out that, during his time with Dallas, the monkey lived large.

"He was one of us," Bryant said. "The monkey was one of us. He got pure A1 treatment."

Bryant also said the monkey still recognizes him when he goes to visit. "Yeah, he recognizes me," he said. "I gave him his name."

It sucks to hear that Bryant had to give up his monkey so quickly, but this might serve as a good cautionary tale for any other pro athletes who want to buy one in the future.
