It may have taken a little longer than expected, but Serena Williams has now tiedΒ Steffi Graf for the most Grand Slam wins in the Open era.
Following a string of losses to Roberta Vinci in the U.S. Open, AngeliqueΒ KerberΒ in the Australian Open, and Garbine MuguruzaΒ at the French Open last month, Williams just couldn't seem to capture that elusive 22nd Grand Slam title. However, her coach Patrick MouratoglouΒ didn't appear concerned at all. "So it's going to take the time it's going to take. But we're going to do it," he told reporters after her loss to Muguruza.Β "The good thing is we'll have many (chances) because she's in finals almost every time."
With her victoryΒ over No. 4Β Kerber, 7-5, 6-3, in today's Wimbledon final, Williams captures her seventh trophy in the competition. When the match officially came to an end, Serena was clearly relieved to get one step closer to undoubtedly solidifying herself as the greatest to ever play the sport. Β
"I had a couple of tries this year, I lost to two great opponentsβone of them actually being Angelique," Williams said, after the match. "It makes the victory even sweeter to know how hard I worked for it."Β
Count 'em up!Β
