Serena Williams was defeated by Garbine Muguruza at the French Open final earlier today in two sets, 7-5, 6-4. With the victory, 22-year-old Muguruza captures the first Grand Slam title of her career. Meanwhile, Williams is still staring down that elusive 22 major title Open era record held by Steffi Graf. This loss marks the third straight time Serena has fallen short of putting her name in record books.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Serena has lost more finals this season than in the last four years combined. At 34, Williams could be hitting the decline, or perhaps this string of losses is merely a slump. Her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, appears to subscribe to the latter.

Per CNN:

"You can't play a grand slam final for history like any other, even though one grand slam final is a lot," he told reporters. "So it's going to take the time it's going to take. But we're going to do it.

Williams has proven time and time again that she's a freak athlete, so Mouratoglou may be right. We've been spoiled for years when it comes to her greatness, and it's possible Serena will eventually come out of this low point and live up to her No. 1 ranking. Just give it a little time.
