Seeking to derail the campaign of a billionaire with no political experience, a group of unknown (but supposedly prominent) Republicans allegedly asked successful investor and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, a billionaire with no political experience, to run as an independent against Donald Trump.
The Mavericks owner relayed the story to The Washington Post, and divulged that their effort to get him to follow Trump's lead was roughly as successful as it was when he tried it with The Benefactor—which is to say it didn't go very well.
Cuban said, "[Trump] could come after me all he wanted, and he knows I would put him in his place." He added that, in a land of perpetual campaigning, "I don't see it happening" because the six months between now and the election aren't nearly enough time.
When asked who was in the cabal attempting to sabotage their own candidate, Cuban declined to name names, but claimed that they pitched him on his ability to win due to his "bluster and volume, combined with substance and the ability to connect with voters on a more personal basis." It sounds as if the conversations didn't get very far though. They "reached out to my right-hand man who is my D.C. guy," and that his own "conversations with them were minimal," Cuban said.
Previously (as in like a few days ago) Cuban described Trump as:
"[T]hat guy who’ll walk into the bar and say anything to get laid. That’s Donald Trump right now to a T. But it’s all of us who are going to get fucked.”
And:
"Everybody’s got that friend that you just shake your head at. He’s that guy who’d get drunk and fall over all the time, or just says dumb shit all the time, but he’s your friend.”
And:
"A goddamn airhead."
That's probably what they meant about his "bluster and volume." Either way they'll have to head back to the drawing board.
