After the UCONN women's basketball team routed Mississippi State 98-38 in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament just over one week ago, there was much discourse in the media started from Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy's scathing tweet heard 'round the college basketball world about whether the Lady Huskies were too dominant and detrimental to the women's game. Shaughnessy also claimed that he'd rather not watch them play.
The white noise didn't seem to stop the Huskies from mushing on, nor the rest of us from watching UCONN win their fourth straight NCAA title on Tuesday night against Syracuse, 82-51. This victory now counts as their 11th (yes, 11!) total championship banners for the Lady Huskies to hang in Gampel Pavilion.
And even Shaughnessy ate his words and couldn't avoid watching the record-setting night for the Lady Huskies.
Haters gon' hate. They finished the season undefeated at 38-0, with a winning streak of 75 games, and it's their sixth unbeaten season under legendary head coach Geno Auriemma. He now moves past UCLA head coach John Wooden for the most titles in NCAA history.
UCONN's Big Three [senior Breanna Stewart (2016 Women's Player of the Year, fourth-consecutive NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Award winner), Moriah Jefferson, and Morgan Tuck] are now the only players, men or women, to win four straight titles in NCAA history. In her final college game, Stewart had 24 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 blocks.
