At this point in time—or any point in time, really—it’s definitely not a good idea for the NFL or anyone associated with the NFL to make a joke about concussions. We're just two weeks away from the release of the Will Smith movie, Concussion, and the concussion problem isn’t going away anytime soon.
Despite this, former NFL quarterback Roger Staubach joked very openly about the concussions he suffered during his playing days at the beginning of a speech he gave at the National Football Foundation Dinner this week. He mistakenly referred to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell as former NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle during his speech—and then explained himself by blaming, yes, concussions.
“I apologize,” he said. “I had six concussions in the NFL.”
And amazingly, everyone laughed and applauded…including Goodell! Staubach then went on to say that Goodell approved the joke, which c’mon, even if he didn’t actually approve it, is just not a good look for anyone involved.
