On Monday night, Lewis Hamilton crashed his $2 million Pagani Zonda supercar in Monaco. And when he did, he probably could have come up with any number of excuses for why it happened. For example, he could have said, “An animal ran out in the middle of the street and I tried to avoid it.” It would have been a perfectly reasonable explanation for what happened and it would have made him look like such a great guy.

He chose not to try to lie about what happened, though. Instead, he was 100 percent honest—maybe even a little too honest?—and blamed the crash on…”heavy partying.” It doesn’t sound like he was partying in the hours leading up to the crash (at least, we don't think he was), but he did admit to spending more than a week partying hard prior to the accident.

“It was a result of heavy partying and not much rest for 10 days,” he said, according to BBC. “I am a bit run down. I have been going non-stop and trying to fit training in at the same time and not getting a lot of sleep.”

Here’s a photo of the crash:

Hamilton also posted this message on Instagram explaining what happened:

We’re glad Hamilton is OK and appreciate his honesty. But can you imagine if a major athlete here in the U.S. blamed a car crash on “heavy partying”? Yikes.

Hamilton is currently preparing to take part in the Brazilian Grand Prix this weekend.
