Memphis Shows How Not to Defend Against a Hail Mary

Always bat down that ball.

The Hail Mary is inherently a low-percentage play: You throw the ball, you pray, and hopefully two arms within a sea of them give you six points. So yeah, low percentage.

However, it's an even lower percentage play when there are more hands looking to bat down that ball. Interceptions are cool until they end up deflecting the ball upward, giving wanting hands another opportunity for a miracle touchdown. Tulsa was down 35-14 going into the half when it found itself on the winning end of that scenario. Memphis' Arthur Maulet thought he was getting that quick into, but instead, he ended up giving Keyarris Garrett a touchdown.

But it's not like Memphis continued to screw up afterward. The Tigers scored a crazy 66 points to remain undefeated.
